Excited to ditch the winter wear and dive into spring fashion? We are, too! We’re less excited, however, about how messy our closets have gotten over the past couple of seasons. If your closet looks anything like ours, it’s probably high time for some spring cleaning. This can seem like a daunting task, but it is SO worth it once your closet looks like your own personal fashion boutique. Here are our top tips on how to clean out your closet to make room for spring fashion.
Tackle Your Closet in Chunks
While it can be tempting to spend a day cleaning the entire closet in one go, you don’t want to lose steam while your entire wardrobe is spread out all over the floor. To make this task less daunting, split your closet into sections, then tackle them one at a time. This can turn hours of work into short closet cleaning sessions that you can easily fit into your daily routine. Tackle your pumps collection one day, shorts and pants the next. After just a few days of this, you’ve got a clean closet!

Take Time to Categorize
It’s hard to know what all of your options are when they’re all spread out around your closet. While you clean, create spots in your closet for each type of item so that everything has its own place. It’ll be easier to find summer tees if you don’t have to dig through winter sweaters to find them. This is also a good way to know what all you have in your closet before you go shopping next.

Try the One-Year Rule
We all have those pieces in our closets that get passed over again and again and again. At this point, they’re taking up space in your closet that could be used to store something you’ll love. When you are taking these items out for your closet spring cleaning, ask yourself if you have worn them in the past year. If it has been over a year since you last wore that sundress, it might be time to let it go.

Start a Few Different Piles
Instead of throwing things into “yes” and “no” piles, create a few different options for unwanted clothes and shoes. The “yes” pile stays the same, though you could sort it by season so that winter items can be stashed for later. To make the process of getting rid of the “no” pile easier, split it up into these instead:
Items to Sell
Items that are still in great condition can be easily sold online or at resale boutiques for money that you can then use to update your wardrobe. Same goes for shoes, bags, and accessories, especially items that are pricier or come from popular brands. Getting even a couple of dollars for these items is a bonus over simply giving them away, and another fashionista out there will be thrilled to get that piece for a steal.

Item to Donate
Donating clothes and shoes that you don’t want any more is a great way to pass these pieces on to someone else who will love them just as much as you did. Items in this pile can have some light wear and tear but can still be worn. Some items, like jean jackets and other denim pieces, can have a long lifespan if they are cared for properly. Donating gently-used clothes and shoes keeps them out of the landfill and grants them a second life in someone else’s closet.

Items to Throw Away
Unfortunately, there will always be a few pieces in our closets that can’t be saved. Torn jeans, paint-stained shirts, unravelling sweaters, these all go in the “throw away” pile. If you’re holding onto something sentimental that’s been damaged past the point of wear, a simple DIY project could turn it into a keepsake that you can keep in another room of the house.
Stock Up on Organization Tools
Outfitting your closet with a few simple organization tools can keep your space cleaner, longer. They can even enhance the look of your closet, as many storage bins are designed are to fit popular home decor trends. Add a shoe organizer over the door and an earring tree for jewelry, and your closet will look like a boutique in no time.
